No idea how many guys here might know me, or not, so I figured as Dave’s co-writer on this epic - which happens to be my first Nano, I ought to drop in, introduce myself and say ‘Hi’…

So, the preliminaries - who am I? Which in this case really means ‘What have I done?’ so, the potted resume, four warhammer novels for Black Libary (all vampiric nastiness), 2 Slaine novels for 2000AD/Black Flame, I’ve written for Doctor Who, Torchwood, Primeval and Stargate … so I am one of those nasty tie-in writers. I’ve also done a fair bit of original stuff like The Hollow Earth, Laughing Boy’s Shadow and Angel Road, which have all been fairly well received small press books. Most recently I sold a supernatural thriller, Silver, to Variance for a very nice hardcover and massmarket run next summer, and have other pots bubbling. So that’s me.

Dave’s a good friend and I am really excited about working with him, and seeing what, exactly, mutates out of our minds. The fact that you guys get to read along while we go is actually rather cool. So please, plenty of talk, heckle from the sidelines, all of that.

The Day Is Nearly Upon Us…Let There Be Hallowed Ground

Really psyched to start working on this tomorrow. Also happy that my collaborator, Steve Savile, who will be taking each chapter as it’s written, polishing and revising it, and joining in on the commentary and contest fun has signed in and has his account ready to go. Point being, if you see a post here and I didn’t make it, as long as he did, it’s cool.

Also remember, if you send anyone here after we start…until they register, all they will see is these public posts. The novel will be posted as private posts so that only those subscribing can read along. Hope you’ll enjoy the story as much as Steve and I have enjoyed plotting it. I’m totally into this one…

THE BOOK HAS CHANGED - THE PLAN HAS CHANGED

Okay…don’t panic. I’ll still be writing a book in November, and you are still invited to read along. It’s just that it’s not going to be THE LEDGER - it’s going to be a weird western dark fantasy titled Hallowed Ground. I’m supposed to write this book with author (and my good buddy ) Steve Savile. We have an outline, but we’ve been unable to find a good time to actually WRITE it.

We have decided this. I am going to write the rough draft a chapter at a time during Nanowrimo. Steve is going to do a second draft of each chapter, revising, adding, chopping, etc. We will let you read along with the revised versions of each chapter. That way I still write 50k words in November (probably a lot more than that) and Steve can do a second draft from what I do and tighten the book up - so we have our book ready for submission shortly after Nano is done, you get two writers for one and a cleaner manuscript…

Hope this works for everyone. I’m psyched because I LOVE this book…seriously love this book. I’m dying to start writing it, and now the hard thing will be waitinf for November 1st…

A Decision Has Been Reached - The Ledger is the Book

I actually am not sold yet on the title, but I have the outline finished for the first fourteen chapters of the book, and expect to have the rest of the outline completed shortly. This is the story of two families with a shared, dark history, a secret place, a secret society - and what happened when a young man finds the secret’s buried in an old Ledger. It has suspense, historical mystery, a hint of science fiction and magic - has a coming of age story and romance - and will come to you one segment at a time during the month of November.

I will probably leave a few more hints along the way as the outline builds. Register today, tell your friends! The novel will not be posted publicly, but if you register for this site (using the controls on the right) you’ll be able to sign in and view the private posts - participate in the nuts-and-bolts discussion as I write the book - and possibly be in line for some prize giveaways. I’ve been known to do that in the past.

If you would like to read along in the month of November as I write my next 50,000 words or more of a new novel, register at the right and join the crew. I’ve set this up so that registered users are the only ones that can see posts marked as private. Other posts, like this one, will be available to anyone who visits the site, but they will only be intended to draw people in to join the reading / commenting group.

I’ve been doing Nanowrimo since 2004. Since then I have finished the novels “The Mote in Andrea’s Eye,” “Vintage Soul,” “The Orffyreus Wheel,” and the first 50,000 words of “Gideon’s Curse”. I’m not sure what I’ll be writing this year, but there’s only one way to find out (unless you are me). Sign up and read along!
